Why is Earth so special?
Earth is the only planet we know of that has life! We have plants, animals, oceans, and even tiny creatures you can only see with a microscope. What makes Earth perfect for life?
- Just the Right Temperature: Earth is like Goldilocks—not too hot, not too cold, but just right! That's because we're the perfect distance from the sun.
- Water, Water Everywhere: Over 70% of Earth is covered in water, which is essential for all living things. From the oceans to rivers and lakes, water makes our planet beautiful and full of life.
- The Air We Breathe: Earth has an atmosphere, a protective layer of gases that surrounds our planet. It gives us air to breathe and helps keep us safe from harmful things from space.
Spinning Around:
Did you know that Earth is always moving? It spins like a top! It takes 24 hours for Earth to make one complete spin, which is why we have day and night.
A Trip Around the Sun:
Earth also travels around the sun in a big, wide circle called an orbit. It takes 365 days for Earth to go all the way around the sun, and that's what we call a year!
What is Earth made of?
Earth is like a giant layer cake!
- The Crust: This is the outermost layer, like the hard crust of bread. It's where we live, and it's made up of rocks and soil.
- The Mantle: This is the thickest layer, like the gooey inside of a cake. It's made of hot, molten rock.
- The Core: This is the center of the Earth, like the yummy filling in a cake. It's incredibly hot and made mostly of iron and nickel.
Fun Fact Time!
- Earth is the only planet in our solar system not named after a Greek or Roman god or goddess.
- The Earth is not perfectly round; it's slightly squashed at the poles and bulging at the equator.
- The highest point on Earth is Mount Everest, and the lowest point is the Mariana Trench, which is deeper than Mount Everest is tall!
Taking Care of Our Planet
Earth is our home, and it's important to take care of it. We can all do our part by:
- Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling: This helps conserve resources and protect our environment.
- Conserving Water: Turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth and take shorter showers.
- Planting Trees: Trees help clean the air and provide homes for animals.
