Have you ever dreamt of unearthing your own sparkling gemstone treasures? Join me on a thrilling adventure to Kimbasket Lake in British Columbia, a hidden gem (pun intended!) known for its abundance of beautiful garnets.
My journey began with an invitation from my friend Chris, who runs Silver Cove, Canada's largest rock and gem distributor. He invited me to a rockhounding rendezvous on one of his claims, a place practically overflowing with garnets.
A Garnet Paradise
Imagine stepping onto a beach where almost every rock shimmers with the deep red hues of garnets. That's Kimbasket Lake! The garnets here are found within a garnet schist, a type of rock formed over millions of years. The constant ebb and flow of the lake erode the softer rock, leaving behind pockets of concentrated garnets just waiting to be discovered.
The Thrill of the Hunt
I spent two incredible days exploring the shores of Kimbasket Lake, my eyes glued to the ground, searching for those telltale flashes of red. The garnets ranged in size from tiny specks to impressive two-inch giants! And the best part? You don't need fancy tools – just your own two hands and a keen eye.
More Than Just Garnets
While garnets were the stars of the show, Kimbasket Lake held other treasures, too. We found shimmering starlight crystals, known for their unique cross-shaped formations, and even some beautiful blue kyanite.
From Rough Stone to Sparkling Gem
One of the most exciting aspects of this trip was the potential of these garnets. Many were incredibly clear and gemmy, meaning they could be cut and faceted into stunning gemstones. I even took a few home to experiment with cabbing and polishing, and the results were amazing!
