What is Rounding?

Imagine you have a long, wiggly worm. If you want to tell someone how long it is, you could measure it exactly with a ruler. But sometimes, it's easier to say it's "about" a certain length. Maybe it's "about" as long as your hand, or "about" as long as a pencil.

Rounding numbers is similar! We take a number and find a nearby number that's easier to understand and use. Instead of saying you have 198 stickers, you could say you have "about 200" stickers. See? It's much easier to say and remember!

How to Round Numbers

Ready to learn the magic trick? Here's a step-by-step guide to rounding numbers:

  1. Find the Rounding Place: First, figure out what place value you're rounding to – tens, hundreds, thousands, or even tenths or hundredths for decimals.
  2. Look to the Right: Check out the digit to the right of the rounding place. This little guy is the key to the whole operation!
  3. Rounding Rule:
    • If the digit to the right is 5 or more (5, 6, 7, 8, 9), we round up the digit in the rounding place.
    • If the digit to the right is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, 4), we keep the digit in the rounding place the same.
  4. Replace with Zeros: All the digits to the right of the rounding place become zeros.

Let's try rounding a few numbers together:

  • Round 17 to the nearest ten: The tens place has the digit '1'. Looking to the right, we see a '7', which is 5 or more. So, we round the '1' up to '2', and the '7' becomes a '0'. Therefore, 17 rounded to the nearest ten is 20.
  • Round 342 to the nearest hundred: The hundreds place has the digit '3'. The digit to the right is '4', which is less than 5. We keep the '3' the same and replace the '42' with '00'. So, 342 rounded to the nearest hundred is 300.
  • Round 6.82 to the nearest tenth: The tenths place has the digit '8'. The digit to the right is '2', which is less than 5. We keep the '8' the same and drop the '2'. So, 6.82 rounded to the nearest tenth is 6.8.
