8 Comma Rules

Learn about 8 basic comma rules for writing in English. Learn how to use commas, explain each of these rules, and see several examples. Get in-depth explanations and then a practice session for each rule.  Commas are used in English to set off nonessential phrases, clauses, and words.  A comma can be used to set off a list that is already in a sentence.  For example, I have many favorite things: ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, hot showers, and fluffy slippers.
