In this video, students will be reviewing long division. It starts by going over some basic terms you'll need to know. The dividend is the number that will be divided by another number. The divisor is the number that divides into the dividend. Finally, the quotient is the answer. Another way to think about is the dividend is what we want to divide and the divisor is what we will use as our dividing tool; when we work out the problem, it will become known as a quotient (the answer). So, you could say a dividend divided by a divisor gives you a quotient. Say that three times fast!
In the video the first example is 2,232 divided by 6. 2,232 is the dividend, 6 is the divisor, and the answer is always the quotient. I like to remember it by imaging the long division sign like a house. There is a den in the house (diviDENd). The number outside the house is in the hot sun and needs to wear a visor (diVISOR).
Next, the teacher in the video breaks down the five steps needed when solving long division. They are: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, R&R (repeat and remainder). She then proceeds to work through the problem, explaining each step carefully. She suggests writing the symbols of each step (➗X-🠋R&R) on your paper and using your finger to keep track of each step. Like using your finger when reading. When you first get started, it can be hard to keep track, but as you practice, it gets easier and you don't need your finger to follow along anymore. Like riding a bike, you need training wheels to help you build confidence.
The visuals are great in this video. You feel like you are really working together on the math problem. The bright colors against the black background make it easy to focus. The way she works through the steps gives the students time to think about the answers without belittling them with long pauses and cheeky music like for younger kids. 4th and 5th graders want to be treated like big kids. This video does a great job at that!
This is a wonderful tool for at-home practice. Especially if it has been a while since parents have done long division. This will help remind the parent or homework helper how to solve these math problems. The video would also make a great self-guided learning activity. You could easily create a worksheet or other resource that starts with the problems in this video, then add a few more for students to do on their own.
