Inventions – Finding Stuff Out

In this video, a kid (Zoey), helps kids answer submited questions all about inventions. It is silly but very enducational. I love the example set by kids for kids. Kids in the show love sicience and that is wonderful! I especially love that girls are featured just as much as boys. All students can love STEM and STEAM classes!

This is a great way to introduce engineering design elements into your science class. Standards are listed at the end of this article. You can show this video on day one or two of this topic. Students can determine a problem they'd like to solve, brainstorm possible solutions to the problem, and test those solutions over the course of a few days. You know your class best and can better set an accurate time frame.

What is the difference between an invention and a discovery? This video answers that question in a clear and simple way. For example, they illustrate Archimedes discovering displacement, not inventing it. I am reminded of the fact that Newton did not invent gravity, he discovered it. If he had invented it, things would have floated off into space.

My favorite thing about this video is the way it encourages kids to be curious. The video is all about kids inventing and discovering. The kids are the ones asking the questions and answering them. It features many inventions and discoveries by kids too! It is a great way to inspire your students to ask more questions and find creative solutions.

Next Generation Science Standards:

3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
