In 1775, Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire, England. She had seven siblings. Her howe village was quite small, but her family was well respected. At the age of seven, Jane and her sister, Cassandra went to live with a relative, a private tutor. While there, they both caught typhus and nearly died.
In 1785 Jane and Cassandra went to a boarding school called Abbey School for Girls, Reading Abbey Gateway. During the next year, they returned home where their family's library filed Jane's love for reading. With her family's encouragement, she began writing.
In her 20s, she began writing her novels, Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. It wouldn't be until 1811 when Sense and Sensibility was published. She was simply credited as "By A Lady." Nevertheless, the book sold out bringing in much-needed funds for her family after the death of her father.
After the success of Sense and Sensibility, she tried again to get Pride and Prejudice published. In 1813 she was successful. In 1814 she would publish Mansfield Park and Emma in 1815.
On July 18, 1817, at the age of 41, Jane passed from an unknown health condition. It is believed her sister Cassandra destroyed any letters containing details about Jane's health. After her death, she was publically recognized as the author of her work. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published after her death or posthumously.
