Sewing a Lanyard: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
Lanyards are a versatile accessory, perfect for holding keys, ID badges, or even adding a pop of color to your outfit. Making your own lanyard is a fun and easy project, even for beginners. This guide will walk you through the process, covering two methods: creating a continuous loop and attaching snaps to the strap.
Materials You'll Need:
- Fabric (we recommend a sturdy woven fabric like cotton or nylon)
- Scissors
- Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
- Sewing pins
- Measuring tape
- Optional: Snaps (for a detachable lanyard)
Method 1: Continuous Loop
Step 1: Cut Your Fabric
Measure the desired length of your lanyard, adding about 2 inches for seam allowance. Cut two strips of fabric to this length.
Step 2: Sew the Ends Together
Pin the ends of one fabric strip together, right sides facing. Sew along the edge, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Repeat for the other strip.
Step 3: Turn the Strips Right Side Out
Carefully turn the sewn strips right side out, using a blunt object like a chopstick to help you push out the corners. Press the seams flat.
Step 4: Sew the Strips Together
Pin the two strips together, right sides facing, along the entire length. Make sure the raw edges are aligned. Sew along the edge, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
Step 5: Turn the Lanyard Right Side Out
Turn the lanyard right side out, using the same technique as in Step 3. Press the seam flat.
Step 6: Finish the Ends
Fold the ends of the lanyard inward by 1/2 inch and press. Fold again and sew along the edge to secure the ends.
Method 2: Adding Snaps
Step 1: Cut Your Fabric
Measure the desired length of your lanyard, adding about 1 inch for seam allowance.
Step 6: Attach the Snaps
Follow the instructions that came with your snaps to attach them to the ends of your lanyard. Make sure the snaps are securely fastened.
