Who was Abraham Lincoln?
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He's known as 'Honest Abe' and played a HUGE role in ending slavery in America. Pretty impressive, right? Let's learn more about this amazing man!
Early Life
- Born on February 12, 1809, in a small log cabin in Kentucky. Can you imagine living in a one-room house?
- His family was poor, and he couldn't go to school regularly.
- Lincoln LOVED to learn! He borrowed books and taught himself. Talk about dedication!
- He worked many jobs: shopkeeper, postmaster, even a lawyer!
Becoming President
- Lincoln was elected president in 1860.
- He believed slavery was wrong and wanted to stop it.
- This made some states angry, and they decided to leave the United States. They formed their own group called the Confederacy.
The Civil War
- The disagreement over slavery led to a war between the North (United States) and the South (Confederacy).
- It was called the Civil War, and it lasted four years!
The Emancipation Proclamation
- In 1862, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
- This order declared that slaves in Confederate states should be freed.
