Their journey began in the early 1960s, a time when the allure of adventure and the open road called to many. Helen, a young woman from New York, yearned to explore the world. Ralph, an amateur pilot from California, offered a shared flight back home. Their destination: San Francisco, with a stop in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.
Winter had gripped the Yukon, blanketing the landscape in snow and ice. Despite treacherous conditions, they took to the skies in Ralph's small, single-engine plane. What followed was a harrowing flight through blinding snowstorms, the plane tossed about like a leaf in a hurricane. Lost and low on fuel, they braced for impact.
Stranded in a Frozen Wasteland
The plane crashed on a remote mountainside, leaving Helen with a broken arm and Ralph nursing broken ribs and a fractured jaw. They were stranded, miles from civilization, with minimal supplies and temperatures plummeting to -45 degrees Celsius.
