Apple Crisp: A Sweet and Simple Fall Dessert
Apple crisp is a classic fall dessert that is perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas. It's a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that the whole family will love. This apple crisp recipe features a sweet cinnamon apple filling topped with a crunchy oat crumble topping. It's the perfect combination of flavors and textures.
Ingredients
- 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (about 6 medium apples)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- In a large bowl, combine the apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat.
- Pour the apple mixture into a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- In a medium bowl, combine the oats, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Stir until combined.
- Add the melted butter to the oat mixture and stir until combined. The mixture should be crumbly.
- Sprinkle the oat mixture over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
- Dot the top of the oat mixture with the cold butter pieces.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
- Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
Tips
- To peel, core, and slice the apples quickly and easily, use an apple peeler and corer.
- If you don't have an apple peeler and corer, you can peel the apples with a vegetable peeler and then use a sharp knife to core and slice them.
- You can use any type of apples you like for this recipe. I like to use a combination of tart and sweet apples, such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp.
- If you don't have old-fashioned rolled oats, you can use quick oats, but the texture of the topping will be slightly different.
- You can add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, to the oat mixture for extra flavor.
- Serve apple crisp warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of custard.
