BepiColombo: Unveiling Mercury’s Mysteries

A Long and Winding Road to Mercury

Launched in 2018, the BepiColombo spacecraft is making its way through the vast expanse of space, utilizing a complex series of gravity assists from Earth, Venus, and Mercury itself. This intricate dance with celestial bodies allows the spacecraft to gradually slow down and enter Mercury’s orbit in 2025.

The mission is named after Giuseppe ‘Bepi’ Colombo, an Italian mathematician who made significant contributions to our understanding of Mercury’s orbit.

Two Spacecraft, One Mission

BepiColombo is unique in that it actually comprises two separate spacecraft: the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO).

• MPO, developed by ESA, is designed to study Mercury’s surface, geology, and composition. It’s equipped with a suite of advanced instruments, including a high-resolution camera, a laser altimeter, and a magnetometer.
• MMO, developed by JAXA, will investigate Mercury’s magnetic field and its interaction with the solar wind. This spacecraft carries instruments to measure the magnetic field, plasma, and energetic particles in Mercury’s magnetosphere.
