The Pieces

Each player has 16 pieces:

  • King: The most important piece on the board. It can move one square in any direction.
  • Queen: The most powerful piece. It can move any number of squares in a straight line, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
  • Rook: Can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
  • Bishop: Can move any number of squares diagonally.
  • Knight: The only piece that can jump over other pieces. It moves in an L-shape: two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicular to that direction.
  • Pawn: The weakest piece. It can move one square forward, but on its first move, it can move two squares forward. It can only capture pieces diagonally in front of it.

Each piece has a unique symbol:

Piece Symbol
King ♔ (White) ♚ (Black)
Queen ♕ (White) ♛ (Black)
Rook ♖ (White) ♜ (Black)
Bishop ♗ (White) ♝ (Black)
Knight ♘ (White) ♞ (Black)
Pawn ♙ (White) ♟ (Black)

Ranks and Files

The chessboard is divided into ranks and files.

  • Ranks: The horizontal rows of squares. They are numbered from 1 to 8, starting from the white player's side.
  • Files: The vertical columns of squares. They are labeled from a to h, starting from the white player's left side.

To identify the position of a piece, you use the rank and file it's on. For example, the white queen is usually placed on the D1 square (rank 1, file D).
