chicken head tracking: the stability and guidance of motion

did you know that chickens have an incredible ability to keep their heads stable? this is thanks to a gyro-like mechanism in their ears that has three mutually orthogonal inertial measurement devices. modern motion processors use something called an inertial measurement unit (imu), which provides movement data that can be used to compensate for movement. chickens apparently have the same type of mechanism, only with a higher update rate.

in fact, this idea was used in a commercial by mercedes-benz: "mercedes-benz tv: magic body control tv commercial". it's amazing how nature can inspire technology!

but how does this work exactly? our bodies use a similar mechanism to keep our heads stable, but chickens have a higher update rate. this means that they can adjust their head position more quickly and accurately than we can. it's like they have a built-in stabilizer!

if you're interested in learning more about chicken head tracking, check out this video by pennywhistle productions/smarter every day: http://on.fb.me/chicknman. it's a fun and educational video that explains the science behind chicken head tracking in a way that's easy to understand.

unfortunately, the chickens used in the video were eaten by the family dog. whoops! but the video is still worth watching for its educational value.
