Between 1949 and 1961, an estimated 2.6 million East Germans fled to the West, accounting for nearly one-sixth of the country’s entire population. This mass exodus prompted the East German government to take drastic measures to stem the flow of its citizens.
The Berlin Wall: A Symbol of Division
In August 1961, the construction of the Berlin Wall began, physically dividing the city of Berlin into East and West. This concrete barrier, heavily guarded by armed soldiers, became a potent symbol of the Cold War’s ideological divide.
