welcome to geography now! we're on a mission to cover every single country in the world, and today, we're focusing on namibia. this beautiful country is home to diverse landscapes, from the namib desert to the kalahari desert, and the fish river canyon.

while we're not talking about the biblical figure, we are discussing the nama or namaqua people, who have a significant place in namibia's history. the namaqua genocide, considered the first genocide of the 20th century, was a tragic event that occurred between the germans and the nama and herero people in what was then called german southwest africa.
bc interruption: the namaqua genocide
estimates show that between 24,000 to 100,000 herero people and over 10,000 nama lost their lives during this conflict. these numbers represent over half of their entire tribes' populations. historians believe that if this hadn't happened, the nama and herero people might have been the largest demographic in namibia, rather than the ovambo people.
south africa's role
after the germans left, south africa took over in 1915. it's important to note that south africa had already gained independence at that time, making it the first time within modern history that an african country took control of another african country.
