How to Replace a Photocell Sensor
A photocell sensor, also known as a photo control or photo eye, is a device that uses light to control the operation of an electrical circuit. It is commonly used in outdoor lighting systems to automatically turn the lights on at dusk and off at dawn. When the photocell sensor detects darkness, it closes the circuit, allowing electricity to flow to the lights. When the sensor detects light, it opens the circuit, turning the lights off.
Over time, photocell sensors can malfunction. This can be due to a number of factors, such as exposure to the elements, dirt, or simply age. If your photocell sensor is not working properly, you may need to replace it.
Tools Needed
- Screwdriver
- Wire strippers
- Voltage tester
- New photocell sensor
Steps
- Turn off the power to the circuit. This is important to do before you begin working on the photocell sensor. Make sure you have turned off the power at the breaker box or fuse box.
- Remove the old photocell sensor. The photocell sensor will be mounted to a wall or post. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the sensor in place. Once the screws are removed, you can pull the sensor off the wall or post.
- Disconnect the wires. The photocell sensor will have two or three wires connected to it. Use wire strippers to strip a small amount of insulation off the ends of the wires. Then, carefully disconnect the wires from the sensor.
- Install the new photocell sensor. Mount the new photocell sensor to the wall or post in the same location as the old sensor. Use the screws that came with the new sensor to secure it in place.
- Connect the wires. Connect the wires from the new photocell sensor to the wires that were connected to the old sensor. Make sure you connect the wires in the same order as they were connected before. You can use a voltage tester to make sure you have connected the wires correctly.
- Turn the power back on. Once you have connected the wires, you can turn the power back on to the circuit. Test the photocell sensor by covering it with your hand. The lights should turn on when you cover the sensor and turn off when you remove your hand.
Tips
- When choosing a new photocell sensor, make sure it is compatible with your existing lighting system.
- If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to replace the photocell sensor.
- Always turn off the power to the circuit before working on the photocell sensor.
- Be careful when working with electrical wires.
Replacing a photocell sensor is a simple repair that can be done by anyone with basic electrical knowledge. By following these steps, you can ensure that your outdoor lighting system is working properly.
