Making Pockets for a Patchwork Skirt

Making Pockets for a Patchwork Skirt

Adding pockets to a patchwork skirt is a great way to add functionality and style. They can be a simple detail that elevates the look of your skirt or they can be a statement piece in themselves.

There are many different types of pockets that you can add to a skirt, but for this tutorial we will be focusing on patch pockets.

Materials

  • Fabric for pockets (same fabric as skirt or contrasting fabric)
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Measuring tape
  • Iron
  • Sewing needle

Instructions

  1. Cut out your pocket pieces. You will need two pieces of fabric for each pocket. The size of your pockets will depend on the size of your skirt and your personal preference. A good starting point is to make the pockets about 6 inches wide and 8 inches tall.
  2. Pin the pocket pieces together. Right sides facing, pin the two pieces of fabric together along the three sides that will be sewn.
  3. Sew the pocket pieces together. Sew along the pinned edges, leaving the top open. Use a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
  4. Turn the pocket right side out. Carefully turn the pocket right side out through the open top.
  5. Press the pocket flat. Press the pocket flat, making sure that the seam allowances are tucked in.
  6. Pin the pocket to the skirt. Pin the pocket to the skirt where you want it to be placed. Make sure that the raw edges of the pocket are aligned with the raw edges of the skirt.
  7. Sew the pocket to the skirt. Sew the pocket to the skirt using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. You can use a straight stitch or a zig-zag stitch to prevent fraying.
  8. Finish the top of the pocket. You can finish the top of the pocket in several ways. One option is to fold the top edge of the pocket down by 1/4 inch and press it. Then, fold it down again by 1/4 inch and press it. Sew along the folded edge to create a clean finish.

Tips

  • If you are using a contrasting fabric for your pockets, make sure that it is a similar weight to the fabric of your skirt. This will help to prevent the pockets from sagging.
  • You can add a decorative stitch to the top of the pockets to make them more eye-catching.
  • If you want to add a flap to your pockets, you can cut out two pieces of fabric for the flap and follow the same instructions as above. Sew the flap to the top of the pocket before sewing the pocket to the skirt.

Adding pockets to a patchwork skirt is a fun and easy way to personalize your garment. With a little practice, you can create pockets that are both functional and stylish.
