MaVynee Betsch was an African American opera singer who used her platform to fight for environmental justice. She was born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1932, during a time when segregation was still legal. Despite the challenges she faced, MaVynee was determined to make a difference in the world.

MaVynee’s love of the beach began at a young age. However, she quickly realized that most of the beaches in Jacksonville were for whites only. Her grandfather, who was a successful businessman, decided to take matters into his own hands. He purchased a beach that African American families could enjoy without being discriminated against. He named it American Beach.

American Beach quickly became a popular destination for African American families from all over the country. It was a place where they could relax and be themselves without fear of judgment. MaVynee spent many happy hours at American Beach, swimming, singing, and playing with her friends.

As MaVynee grew older, she developed a passion for singing. She studied opera at the Juilliard School in New York City and went on to have a successful career as an opera singer. She performed all over the world, including at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Despite her success as an opera singer, MaVynee never forgot her roots. She remained committed to fighting for environmental justice and preserving American Beach. After the Civil Rights Act of 1964 desegregated public places, American Beach fell into disrepair. MaVynee saw this as an opportunity to save a piece of history and began working to restore the beach.

MaVynee’s efforts paid off. In 1992, American Beach was designated a National Historic Landmark. It is now a popular tourist destination and a reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the civil rights movement.
