Sewing Practice on Paper: Straight & Curvy Lines

Practice sewing on paper before you sew on fabric to get the hang of it!

Sewing on paper is a great way to practice your sewing skills before you start sewing on fabric. It’s also a good way to get a feel for your sewing machine and how it works.

In this video, we’ll be practicing sewing straight and curved lines on paper. We’ll also be talking about the importance of changing your needle after sewing on paper to avoid blunting it.

Materials

• Paper
• Sewing machine
• Sewing needle
• Thread
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Cut out a piece of paper that is the size you want to practice on. I am using a piece of 8.5×11 paper.

2. Place the paper on your sewing machine bed. Make sure the paper is flat and smooth.

3. Thread your sewing machine with a needle and thread that is appropriate for sewing on paper.

4. Lower the needle into the paper. I am using a size 12 needle. You can use a size 14 or 16 needle. I recommend changing the needle after sewing on paper. It will help keep your needle from getting blunt.

5. Start sewing a straight line. Use your sewing machine’s feed dog to guide the paper along. Keep the paper straight as you sew. You can sew back and forth to make a thicker line. You can use different colored threads to make your practice paper more interesting. This is a great way to learn about the feed dog on your sewing machine.

6. Once you have sewn a straight line, try sewing a curved line. You can use a ruler or template to help you make a curved line. Be careful not to pull the fabric as you sew. Sew the line slowly to make sure it is smooth and even. You can practice sewing different shapes and sizes of curves. You can even try sewing freehand curves!

7. When you are finished sewing, remove the paper from your sewing machine. You can use a ruler to check if your lines are straight or curved. If they are not, you can practice sewing them again. You can also use a pencil to draw lines on the paper and then sew over them.

8. You can use a ruler to measure the distance between your lines. This will help you sew consistent lines.
