The Sukhoi Su-37 is a Russian experimental single-seat, super-manoeuvrable multirole jet fighter. It was developed in the 1990s as a potential successor to the Su-27 Flanker. While it never entered production, the Su-37 is a fascinating example of aircraft design and engineering, showcasing cutting-edge technology like thrust vectoring.

What Makes the Su-37 So Special?

The Su-37’s most notable feature is its thrust-vectoring nozzles. These nozzles allow the pilot to direct the engine exhaust in different directions, giving the aircraft incredible maneuverability. This capability allows the Su-37 to perform maneuvers that would be impossible for conventional aircraft, such as:

  • The Cobra maneuver: In this maneuver, the aircraft climbs vertically while pointing its nose downwards. This allows the pilot to maintain altitude while looking directly at the ground.
  • The Pugachev’s Cobra: A more advanced version of the Cobra maneuver, where the aircraft rolls 180 degrees while climbing vertically.
  • The Kulbit: A 360-degree vertical turn, where the aircraft loops back on itself.
