The 4 Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Have you ever wondered what happens to all the trash we throw away? It’s a big problem, but there are things we can do to help! Today, we’re going to learn about the 4 Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. These are simple steps we can take to protect our planet and make sure we have enough resources for everyone.
Refuse
The very first step is to refuse things we don’t need. Think about all the things we buy that we don’t really use. Do we really need that extra toy or that new pair of shoes? Sometimes, it’s better to say “no” to things we don’t need. This helps reduce the amount of waste we create in the first place.
Reduce
The next step is to reduce the amount of stuff we use. Can we use less water when brushing our teeth? Can we pack our lunches in reusable containers instead of using plastic bags? Little changes like these can make a big difference!
Reuse
After we reduce, we can reuse things instead of throwing them away. Old jars can be used to store things in the kitchen. Old clothes can be turned into cleaning rags. There are so many ways to reuse things and keep them out of the landfill!
Recycle
Finally, we can recycle things that can’t be reused. Paper, plastic, glass, and metal can all be recycled! Check the recycling symbols on containers to see what can be recycled in your area. Recycling helps us make new things from old things, which saves resources and reduces pollution.
Why are the 4 Rs important?

What can we do to help?
