Inside the Hyperloop: How It Outpaces the Competition

The Hyperloop's secret weapon is a near-vacuum environment inside its tubes. By drastically reducing air pressure, friction is minimized, allowing pods to glide through the tube at incredible speeds.

But even a tiny bit of air can cause problems. At low speeds, it's not a big deal, but as the pod accelerates, it starts acting like a piston, compressing air in front of it. This is called the Kantrowitz Limit, and it can seriously hinder speed.

To overcome this, some Hyperloop designs incorporate a compressor fan at the front of the pod. This ingenious solution either redirects the air to the back for extra thrust or uses it to create an air cushion for levitation.

Rloop: A Community-Driven Effort to Make Hyperloop a Reality

To accelerate the development of Hyperloop technology, SpaceX launched a competition, and a team called rloop, formed on Reddit, caught the world's attention. They're currently crowdfunding to build their prototype, aiming for a speed of 480 km/h. At this speed, the Kantrowitz Limit isn't a major factor, so they've opted out of the compressor fan for now.

Interestingly, rloop also decided against using an air cushion for levitation, finding it challenging to achieve sufficient lift. Instead, they're going with eight Arx Pax magnetic levitation engines – talk about futuristic!

What makes rloop even more remarkable is that they're up against 29 other teams, many backed by universities with hefty funding. Rloop relies on the power of online communities like Reddit for support. Their story is a testament to the potential of crowdsourced innovation.
