What Exactly is an Area Model?
Think of a rectangle. The area is the space inside that rectangle. An area model uses this idea to help us visualize multiplication. We divide the rectangle into smaller sections, just like your chocolate bar, and then use those sections to find the answer.
Let's See It in Action!
Let's say we want to multiply 12 x 3. Here's how we can use an area model:
- Draw a rectangle: This will represent our problem.
- Break it down: Divide the rectangle into sections based on the numbers. Since 12 is 10 + 2, we'll have two sections: one with a width of 10 and another with a width of 2. The length of our rectangle will be 3.
- Calculate the areas: Now we have two smaller rectangles.
- The first one is 10 units long and 3 units wide (10 x 3 = 30).
- The second one is 2 units long and 3 units wide (2 x 3 = 6).
- Add it up: Finally, add the areas of the smaller rectangles to get the total area: 30 + 6 = 36.
So, 12 x 3 = 36!
