Birds on the Moon? Exploring the Earliest Theories

Fast forward to 1822, when a German count made an extraordinary discovery. He shot a stork, a fairly common occurrence, but this stork had a surprise in store. Lodged in its body was a yard-long spear of African origin! This incredible find provided the first concrete evidence that birds were capable of traveling vast distances.
The Birth of Bird Banding and the Revelation of Migration
Inspired by the spear-carrying stork, ornithologist Johannes Thienemann pioneered a groundbreaking technique: bird banding. By attaching numbered metal rings to the legs of thousands of storks, Thienemann hoped to track their movements.
The results were astounding. Rings returned from Africa confirmed not only that storks migrated south for the winter but also provided the first glimpses into their migratory routes.
