The discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 sent shockwaves through the archaeological world. Glittering gold, intricate artifacts, and the remarkably preserved mummy of the young pharaoh captivated imaginations. But amidst the treasures, some objects whispered of mysteries far deeper than anyone could have imagined. These were artifacts so advanced, so out of place in their historical context, that they challenged our understanding of the past.
Tutankhamun's Iron Dagger: A Gift from the Gods?
One such object was an iron dagger found nestled amongst the pharaoh's burial wrappings. Why is an iron dagger so remarkable? Because during Tutankhamun's reign, around 1300 BC, the world was still in the Bronze Age. Ironworking was a technology yet to be mastered by the Egyptians.
This dagger, however, was exquisitely crafted. Its blade, composed of an iron alloy with a high nickel content, was remarkably rust-resistant. The craftsmanship was so advanced that it lacked any hammer marks, a feat unheard of in traditional Bronze Age metalworking.
