There's a lot of buzz around self-driving cars, but autonomous-driving technology could revolutionize a different industry first โ€” construction. That industry hasnโ€™t changed much over the last several decades, according to some experts, making it an ideal candidate for automation.

โ€œThe way we build today is largely unchanged from the way we used to build 50 years ago,โ€ said Gaurav Kikani, vice president of Built Robotics. โ€œWithin two years, I think weโ€™re really going to turn the corner, and youโ€™re going to see an explosion of robotics being used on construction sites.โ€

The industry is also faced with a labor shortage that the Covid-19 pandemic has further complicated.

โ€œCovid is making people step back and say, โ€˜hey, the way weโ€™ve been doing things for a long time is just not sustainable,โ€™โ€ said Kevin Albert, founder and CEO of Canvas. โ€œIt is just a wake-up call for the industry.โ€

Canvas is one of several companies working on autonomous construction technology. Big players like Caterpillar and Komatsu, and start-ups like SafeAI and Built Robotics, see value in using autonomous machines to accelerate construction projects.

The mining industry was one of the first to employ the use of self-driving tech. Caterpillar began its first autonomy program more than 30 years ago. The company now has the largest fleet of autonomous haul trucks. Caterpillar says itโ€™s hauled 2 billion metric tons in just over six years.

Built Robotics is a San Francisco-based start-up founded by an ex-Google engineer that already has machinery out in the field. Itโ€™s automated several pieces of equipment, such as bulldozers and excavators.

โ€œYou can now collapse your construction timeline so you can knock out work overnight so that itโ€™s ready for your human workers in the morning to speed them along,โ€ Kikani said.

SafeAI is another Silicon Valley start-up. It recently teamed up with Obayashi for a pilot program. Itโ€™s been retrofitting equipment like dump trucks, bulldozers and loaders.

Robots are also helping inside. San Francisco-based Canvas created an autonomous machine for finishing drywall and has worked on projects like the San Francisco International Airport and Chase Arena. Humans work alongside its robotic system.

โ€œDrywall is very hard work on the body,โ€ Albert said. โ€œAnd weโ€™ve seen that 1 out of every 4 workers has to end their career early because of injuries. This will create longer careers for people and also enable people to join the trades that havenโ€™t had access before.โ€

The construction industry is one of the largest sectors in the global economy, with about $10 trillion spent each year. That spending accounts for 13% of the worldโ€™s GDP, even though the sectorโ€™s annual productivity growth has only increased 1% over the past 20 years. According to McKinsey & Co., $1.6 trillion of additional value could be created through higher productivity, and autonomy would help the industry achieve that.

Adventure into the animal kingdom by building robots that resemble and mimic the movements of a penguin and a horseshoe crab. Program a funny dancing robot that can shake, wiggle, and twirl on command. Make your own robotic game in which you try to toss shapes into a hole in a sphere as it moves around. Each robot comes with a preset program that you can run immediately after building it. After learning how the technology works, you can build and program your own robots using the kitโ€™s 182 building pieces.

A full-color, 60-page, step-by-step illustrated manual helps you assemble all of the models and includes information about robotics in the real world. In addition to the robotics experiments, you can conduct hands-on experiments in three-dimensional geometry using the triangular and pentagonal shell pieces.

The free app connects to the robot models via a wireless Bluetooth connection. In the programming mode of the app, the visual programming language allows you to command the robotsโ€™ motors to move for different lengths of time, at different power levels, and in different directions.

Robots will lead the way in the exploration of deep space.

Robots, machines of our nightmares, or servants of man? In the 1930s film Metropolis the robot was an evil character, it represented our darkest fears. By the 1950s they had become even more sinister and powerful, but over that last few decades our opinions of robots have dramatically changed, theyโ€™ve been reinvented as the police force of the future. But can real robots match the exploits of their celluloid cousins?

While the movies were creating ruthless men of steel, real robots were starting their own painful march into the world. Robots are still basic but over the past few decades they have advanced enormously. Before robots can become the masters of the universe, or even the servants of mankind, they need to accomplish one important thing, they need to move around.

This 1999 documentary includes interviews with prominent roboticists and artificial intelligence specialists. Beginning with robot locomotion and historical clips of ingenious experiments from MIT's Leg Laboratory, BigDog's ancestors dynamically walk, hop, trot, and perform impressive gymnastics. To find out the best way for a robot to move around the scientists look to nature. There have been many attempts to copy nature, some successful, others less than perfect.

The ultrasonic sensor works on the same principle as sonar. It sends out sound waves, which bounce off objects. The sensor interprets the echoes returning to it, and from this detects objects in the path of the sensor. Using the app interface, you can program the robots you build to behave based on the feedback coming from the ultrasound sensor.

Build a humanoid robot that walks forward on two legs and pivots to avoid obstacles in its path. An awesome stag beetle model moves backwards or forwards in response to an obstacle, and opens and closes its pincers. Construct a funny crocodile model that wags its tail if no object is in sight, but then opens its giant jaws when an object approaches. Using an additional smartphone and tablet, you can even hack together a cute little spy-bot that roams around and streams video back to the tablet screen. A cool dual-rotor drone model rotates its rotor blades 90 degrees. You can also assemble other fun robots including a robo-dog and robo-dino. After you have learned how the technology works, you can build and program your own robots using the kitโ€™s 230 building pieces.

Experiment with altering the program of your cute dancing robot so that the robot dances to the beat of a song you play for it. Set up an obstacle course and watch the scout rover use its ultrasonic sensor to navigate around the obstacles. A cool helicopter model spins its rotors and then raises its landing gear when you lift it off the tabletop. You can also assemble other fun robots including a dozer bot with a bulldozer blade and a scorpion robot with a stinger tail. After you have learned how the technology works, you can build and program your own robots using the kitโ€™s 233 building pieces.
