Alka-Seltzer reacts with water to form carbon dioxide (CO2) bubbles! The citric acid in the Alka-Seltzer tablet lowers the pH but the sodium bicarbonate in the tablet raises the pH again. This makes Alka-Seltzer a neutralizing agent.
