The Middle Ages saw two hundred years of crusades where Christianity aimed to recover Jerusalem from Islamic rule. After the First Crusade captured the city in 1099, a Christian kingdom was established. However, the Muslim Seljuk Turks retook Jerusalem in 1187. Although Christian armies recaptured the city in 1229, Muslims regained control of Jerusalem in 1244.
